Description:  

VCU Globe is a global education living-learning community that fosters intercultural learning through sustained and structured interactions between program participants; international students, faculty and staff; international visitors, and community members in the Richmond metropolitan area.

The VCU Globe graduate assistants (GAs) provide essential support for the successful implementation of the program’s main programmatic components, courses, and other program-related initiatives. The main programmatic components include global engagement, community outreach, and residence education. The courses, specific to the program, examine concepts of global education, culture, intercultural communication, community, and leadership. The GAs report to the VCU Globe director, and they work directly with VCU Globe faculty and staff members.

Applicants must be degree-seeking, full-time, Master’s-level students enrolled in at least 9 credit hours at VCU during the Fall and Spring semesters.  The graduate assistant position precludes other paid employment at VCU. At the start of employment a GA must have a 3.0 GPA and maintain that GPA throughout employment. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Co-teaching and/or instructional support for VCU Globe classes, to include: developing and delivering class content under the supervision of a faculty member, information gathering, logistics for class lessons, preparation of class materials, grading, and monitoring of assignment submission
  • Programmatic support,  to include: scheduling, determining, and implementing ideas for activities with internal and external faculty, staff, and students, coordinating events in consultation with a VCU Globe faculty member, and when possible, attending the events
  • Assessment support to include data entry of survey findings, possible survey creation, and analysis of survey findings
  • Social media support and development,  to include: maintaining Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, as well as WordPress Blogs and other social media applications; implementing and updating the program’s social media plan, and coordinating student-run social media efforts

Required* qualifications:

  1. Experience working effectively in an office environment
  2. Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team
  3. Excellent organizational skills
  4. Strong word processing and data entry skills using the Microsoft Office Suite – especially Word and Excel
  5. Strong presentation software skills (PPT, Prezi, other)
  6. Strong writing and speaking skills
  7. Ability and willingness to work closely and effectively in a positive manner with internal and external faculty, staff, and students, including effective communication practices
  8. Ability and willingness to develop new interpersonal, professional, and technological skills as needed
  9. Intermediate to advanced social media skills, particularly in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Word Press blogs
  10. Experience effectively and orally communicating information to groups of people in a class, orientation, or event setting
  11. Experience effectively implementing activities for an academic unit, campus office such as Residential Life and Housing, Global Education, Multicultural Affairs, etc., or similar programming experience for an organization, company, student, or volunteer organization

*Because multiple GAs may be hired who can be assigned to different responsibilities that fit their skillset and disposition, interested candidates should apply if they possess required qualifications 1-8 and one or more of required skills 9-11.  

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with global education, residential life, or community engagement
  • Survey development, data collection, or program evaluation experience
  • Qualitative or quantitative research experience
  • Valid driver’s license, good driving ability and record, and the willingness and ability to drive VCU Globe students to program-related events off-campus

Hours and dates of employment:

The GAs will work 20 hours per week from Monday, August 16, 2017- Friday, May 15, 2018 and adhere to the university schedule and approved VCU holidays followed by all university employees. The GAs must set and maintain a reliable schedule between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Time off during Winter Break and Spring Break and for academic or personal needs may be arranged with the director of VCU Globe.   

Compensation: 

VCU Globe GAs receive a stipend of $12,000 for the full academic year as well as IN-STATE tuition.

ONLY IN-STATE TUITION can be offered regardless of student status.

University fees are NOT included.
