The Global Education Office is pleased to announce the inaugural cycle of the International Strategic Initiative Awards. This program will fund proposals from academic units to develop new and innovative programming in support of internationalization goals at Virginia Commonwealth University as expressed in Quest for Distinction:
- Recruit and retain highly qualified students from other countries
- Provide high impact learning experiences for students in a global environment
- Contribute to research, scholarship, creative expression and clinical practice in a global context
The International Strategic Initiative Awards are a component of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Internationalization Initiative.
Award Categories
⊕ GEO/ISI Collaborative Degree Award
Purpose: For academic units to develop paths for structured student mobility in both directions.
Description: This award is intended to support a department or school in developing a collaborative graduate or undergraduate degree program with an international partner institution that will provide a pipeline for international students at VCU and/or a gateway for significant numbers of VCU students to pursue part of their learning overseas. While no fixed number of awards has been set, we anticipate awarding 4 grants of approximately $20,000 each.

⊕ GEO/ISI Departmental Study Abroad Program Award
Purpose: For academic units to develop integrated high capacity international experiences.
Description: This award is intended to support departments or schools in increasing study abroad participation. These seed funds are to be used to develop new programs which will be integrated into departmental curricula in ways that promote academic and financial sustainability. While no fixed number of awards has been set, we anticipate awarding 4 grants of approximately $20,000 each.

⊕ GEO/ISI Global Visiting Scholar Award
Purpose: For academic units to enrich learning and research.
Description: This award is intended to support departments or schools which host an international scholar for a semester or academic year who will contribute to enriching the learning and scholarship of the unit. While no fixed number of awards has been set, we anticipate awarding 4 grants of sufficient amounts to cover airfare and housing.

⊕ GEO/ISI Faculty Development Seminar
Purpose: For faculty to develop and establish overseas research and teaching linkages.
Description: This program seeks to bring groups of selected faculty to specific global partners for the purpose of exploring collaborative research and teaching possibilities. The global partners to be visited will rotate each year to different VCU strategic partners. Spain and Morocco are the target countries for the 2012-2013 Faculty Development Seminar.
