Getting Started

International students explore the nearby Carytown shopping district.

International students and scholars face many challenges when beginning their studies in a new country. The Global Education Office staff offers assistance, guidance and support as they adjust to a different culture and pursue their educational goals.

 
 
 
 

International Student & Scholar Orientation

International Student & Scholar Orientation is required for all new and transfer undergraduate and graduate students with F or J visas. (Students with other visa types are welcome to attend.)

At International Student & Scholar Orientation (ISSO), you will:

  • check in with immigration advisers and learn about important immigration rules and regulations
  • learn about local housing options, health insurance, banking, and other essential needs
  • learn about resources and practices to help you do well in your classes
  • learn about opportunities for getting to know your classmates and professors, making new friends, and exploring Richmond and the region.

ISSO for Fall 2017 is Tuesday, August 15, 2017, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

New international students and scholars should arrive at VCU for the Fall 2017 term no later than Sunday, August 13, 2017, to allow time to get settled before orientation activities begin. Fall 2017 classes begin Thursday, August 24, 2017. (Students who are required to take the ELP Placement Test given on August 14 or 16, 2017, should arrive no later than Sunday, August 13, 2017).

New undergraduates will also be required to attend the VCU New Student Orientation (NSO) on Friday, August 18, 2017. You must register for NSO online at VCU NSO Registration.
