Richmond, VA (April 27, 2023) The Global Education Office (GEO) announces its inaugural 2023-24 Global Learning Program Development Awards intended to fund proposals from Virginia Commonwealth University academic units to develop new and innovative global learning programs, including education abroad, domestic study away with a global focus, or virtual exchange. GEO will grant at least three awards of up to $5,000 each, with additional funding from the REAL Challenge Award Program of up to $4,000 available specifically for the development of new domestic study away programs with a global focus.

“This is a great opportunity for faculty to develop new programs to foster global student success. I hope these awards will incentivize faculty to think innovatively about global learning,” said Jill Blondin, Ph.D., associate vice provost for global initiatives.

Stephanie Tignor, director of global learning, expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity to support faculty in creating new global learning programs. “We are excited to see faculty help meet post-pandemic student demand for study abroad, collaborate with partner universities eager to engage in virtual global learning, and establish domestic study away programs focused on global issues,” said Tignor. "These opportunities will benefit our students by helping them develop employer-valued skills and see their potential on the world stage.”

A call for proposals is now available that includes detailed descriptions of the awards.  Successful applicants will work closely with staff in GEO's Global Learning department for guidance and support in project development.

Completed proposals are due by Thursday, June 1, 2023 by email to geo@vcu.edu with awards announced by June 15.  Funds for the awarded programs should be used by June 30, 2024.
