IEW ‘22 showcases VCU’s internationalization with host of activities

Richmond, VA (November 11, 2022)International Education Week, held Nov. 14 - 18, 2022, is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education was first held in 2000, and today is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide.

The Global Education Office will host a series of events throughout the week to celebrate VCU’s international students and to bring awareness to global engagement activities and internationalization efforts at VCU. The scheduled events include a cooking class and Norimaki sushi rolling demonstration with Japanese exchange students from Shimane University; a Thanksgiving dinner celebration for our international students; a reception honoring visiting scholars; and a lecture by Lionel Larré, Ph.D., president of Bordeaux Montaigne University in France. Larré will discuss "The recovery of Cherokee author John Milton Oskison," a lecture presented in conjunction with the Humanities Research Center.

Highlighted scheduled events and activities for International Education Week include:

  • Cultural Classes & Cooking Kontesuto
    Monday, Nov. 14, 6 - 8 p.m.
    West Grace North Kitchen

    An evening of cultural information and cooking from visiting students of Shimane University in Japan will allow students to learn about cultural topics such as ambiguity, modesty, silence and obligation. During the second hour, the students will engage in a cooking contest of Japanese and American dishes, and enjoy the food with fellow students.

  • Global Learning Open House (and Game Night!)

    The Global Learning Office will host an Open House event for students to visit the Global Learning office, meet the staff of advisors, have snacks and play games.

  • SRISA Information Session
    Tuesday, Nov. 15, 3 p.m.

    Room 3127

    The Education Abroad office will host an information session for VCU Fine Arts students interested in studying in Florence, Italy at SRISA.

  • Thanksgiving celebration for international students
    Tuesday, Nov. 15, 6 - 8 p.m.
    West Grace North, Room 1030J

    A Thanksgiving celebration will be held  for international students to experience a traditional meal and connect with other VCU students and community members.

  • International Internships
    Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1:30 p.m.
    Zoom

    An informational session hosted about international internships in collaboration with Career Services.

  • Nov. 16 - J-1 Students and Scholar Reception
    Wednesday, Nov. 16, 3:30 - 5 p.m.
    Larrick Student Center Ballroom

    A reception will be held recognizing the students and scholars attending VCU on a J-1 visa. This event requires an RSVP to attend.

  • Nov. 17 - Norimaki Sushi Rolling Demonstration
    Thursday, Nov. 17, 6 p.m.
    830 W. Grace Street, 1030J

    A special Global Cafe will feature visiting exchange students from Shimane University, Japan, who will teach attendees how to roll Norimaki sushi.

    A lecture by Lionel Larré, president of Bordeaux Montaigne University, will be presented on "The recovery of Cherokee author John Milton Oskison." The lecture is presented by the Global Education Office and the Humanities Research Center.

  • Inside U.S. Foreign Policy Virtual Seminar

    USA Study Abroad, part of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), and its Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program are pleased to invite current recipients and alumni of the Gilman Program, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, ECA exchange alumni, and all interested U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to attend the 2022 International Education Week virtual event, “From Study Abroad to the State Department: How Developing Global Perspectives Supports U.S. Foreign Policy.”
