Immigrant Visa Application Pause
On January 14, 2026, the U.S. Department of State (DOS) announced a pause on the processing of Immigrant Visas for citizens of specific countries. Please read the DOS statement about the pause, including a list of countries impacted by the pause.
Immigrant Visas are "green card" visas issued to individuals who want to travel to the U.S. in order to remain here permanently.
The DOS statement implies that the pause impacts only Immigrant Visa applications processed by U.S. consulates abroad.
The pause is not expected to apply to other visa types for citizens of impacted countries, including such Nonimmigrant Visas as F-1, J-1, H-1B, O-1, or TN visas.
The pause is not expected to apply to adjustment of status (Form I-485) applications filed with USCIS by citizens of impacted countries currently in the U.S. and seeking green cards.
Nonetheless, citizens of countries impacted by the pause should be prepared for delays in all types of visa applications, including Nonimmigrant Visa applications and I-485 applications.
