Courses offered:

American History and Culture for ESL Learners

21 October – 13 December, Wednesdays, 5:15 p.m. – 8 p.m., $225

Students will enhance their English abilities while exploring American culture and history and their effect on the behavior of the American people. The course is designed to help students improve their listening, speaking, reading comprehension and written composition skills. Students will share their own cultural perspectives and experiences and compare these with behaviors and customs in everyday situations in the United States.

English Language Proficiency Test Preparation

21 October – 13 December, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:15 p.m. – 8 p.m., $450

Students will learn about TOEFL, IELTS, and other English language tests and improve their language skills before taking a test. The course focuses on test-taking skills and strategies and on language skills, such as reading and listening for main ideas, facts, and inferences; planning for writing and speaking, and delivering spoken and written responses. Students will take and discuss practice tests.

Citizenship Test Preparation for ESL Learners

21 October – 13 December, Wednesdays, 5:15 p.m. – 8 p.m., $225

Students will learn all core elements of the citizenship test, as required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This course is based on 100 U.S. History and Government questions, the N-400 application, the USCIS interview, and reading and writing test practice. The course focuses on the civics, history, and vocabulary needed to pass the citizenship test and interview.

Pronouncing American English

21 October – 13 December, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:15 p.m. – 8 p.m., $450

Students will improve their pronunciation skills for effective communication. The course is designed to help students develop fluency, clarity, and understanding of spoken English through study and practice of pronunciation that can be difficult for students from most language backgrounds. Speech recognition technology is used in this course to assess students’ pronunciation skills and provide opportunities for students to practice American English sounds, intonations, and rhythm.
